چکیده

This survey covers the state of the art of techniques for solving general purpose constrained global optimization problems and continuous constraint satisfaction problems, with emphasis on complete techniques that provably find all solutions (if there are finitely many). The core of the material is presented in sufficient detail that the survey may serve as a text for teaching constrained global optimization. After motivation for and important examples of applications of global optimization, a precise problem definition is given, and a general form of the traditional first order necessary conditions for a solution. Then more than a dozen software packages for complete global search are described. A quick review of incomplete methods for bound constrained problems and recipes for their use in the constrained case follows, an explicit example is discussed, introducing the main techniques used within branch and bound techniques. Sections on interval arithmetic, constrained propagation and local optimization are followed by a discussion of how to avoid the cluster problem. Then a discussion of important problem transformations follows, in particular of linear, convex, and semilinear (= mixed integer linear) relaxations that are important for handling larger problems. Next, reliability issues – centering around rounding error handling and testing methodology – are discussed, and the COCONUT framework for the integration of the different techniques is introduced. A list of challenges facing the field in the near future concludes the survey.

Trace - Based Methods for Solving

In this paper we present a method called NOVEL (Nonlinear Optimization via External Lead) for solving continuous and discrete global optimization problems. NOVEL addresses the balance between global search and local search, using a trace to aid in identifying promising regions before committing to local searches. We discuss NOVEL for solving continuous constrained optimization problems and show...

COCOS’02, A Workshop on Global Constrained Optimization and Constraint Satisfaction, Held October 2–4, 2002, Sophia–Antipolis

“This workshop focuses on complete solving techniques for continuous constraint satisfaction and optimization problems that provide all solutions with full rigor. Less rigorous solution techniques are not excluded, since they may be part of complete relevant techniques. Complete solution techniques guarantee that all the constraints – e.g. security or tolerance criteria – are satisfied and the ...

Using global constraints for local search

Conventional ways of using local search are di cult to generalize Increased e ciency is the only goal generality often being disregarded This is manifested in the highly monolithic encodings of complex problems and the application of highly speci c satisfaction methods Other approaches take the general constraint programming framework as a starting point and try to introduce local search method...

Dialectic Search

We introduce Hegel and Fichte’s dialectic as a search meta-heuristic for constraint satisfaction and optimization. Dialectic is an appealing mental concept for local search as it tightly integrates and yet clearly marks off of one another the two most important aspects of local search algorithms, search space exploration and exploitation. We believe that this makes dialectic search easy to use ...
